Celtic Frost

Celtic Frost was formed after Tom Warrior & Martin Ain got sick and tired of everyone saying how bad Hellhammer was. Drummer Reed St. Mark later joined the band Mind Funk. And no, Stephen Priestly is NOT related to Jason Priestly!! Recently a Celtic Frost tribute album was released.

"Morbid Tales/Emperor's Return"

  1. "Into the Crypts of Rays" (4:19)
  2. "Visions of Mortality" (4:46)
  3. "Dethroned Emperor" (4:35)
  4. "Morbid Tales" (3:26)
  5. "Circle of the Tyrants" (4:24)
  6. "Procreation (of the Wicked)" (4:01)
  7. "Return to the Eve" (4:05)
  8. "Danse Macabre"--instrumental (3:51)
  9. "Nocturnal Fear" (3:36)
  10. "Suicidal Winds" (4:33)
  11. "Visual Aggression" (4:08)

Had to special order this CD to upgrade my crappy vinyl copies of CF's first album and EP. It took over six months to arrive, but was worth the wait! (This was pre-Internet, btw.) The liner notes for "Emperor's Return" looked so cool I kept the sheet instead of scanning it like I usually do. Acutally it would have been better if I'd scanned it, would be easier to fit inside the CD case...

Another interesting tidbit (well, it is to me anyway...) When I bought this CD, I mentioned it to my friend, who's deep into gangsta rap & normally HATES my music--and it turned out he LIKES Celtic Frost!! Who would have guessed it? And I know he wasn't lying because I would play the CD while he was around and he would actually sit and listen to it w/o making gagging noises!

Oh, "Circle of the Tyrants" has been covered by Bewitched, and "Dethroned Emporer" was covered by Anthrax.

"To Megatherion"

  1. "Innocence and Wrath"--instrumental (1:02)
  2. "The Usurper" (3:24)
  3. "Jewel Throne" (3:59)
  4. "Dawn of Megiddo" (5:42)
  5. "Eternal Summer" (4:29)
  6. "Circle of the Tyrants" (4:26)
  7. "(Beyond the) North Winds" (3:04)
  8. "Fainted Eyes" (5:00)
  9. "Tears in a Prophet's Dream"--instrumental (2:30)
  10. "Necromantical Screams" (6:06)

Another CD I had to special order, except this time right after I'd ordered it, I found a used copy! Luckily it was a domestic release so the record store didn't bitch at me at all. The rerecording of "Circle of the Tyrants" SUCKS compared to the original one. I kept my crappy vinyl version because of the neat artwork & liner notes, which doesn't come with the CD. (Cheap bastards.)

"Into the Pandemonium" (rare import release!)

  1. "Mexican Radio" (3:28)
  2. "Mesmerized" (3:24)
  3. "Inner Sanctum" (5:14)
  4. "Tristesses de la Lune" (2:58)
  5. "Babylon Fell" (4:18)
  6. "Caress into Oblivion" (5:10)
  7. "One in their Pride (Porthole Mix)" (2:50)
  8. "I Won't Dance (Elder's Orient)" (4:31)
  9. "Sorrows of the Moon" (3:02)
  10. "Rex Irae (Requiem)" (5:57)
  11. "Oriental Masquerade"--instrumental (1:15)
  12. "One in their Pride (Extended Mix)" (5:52)

The first CF album I ever bought (on crappy vinyl), and still my favorite. Lucked out & ran across this rare CD version with "Tristesses de la Lune" (an orchestral, French-language version of "Sorrows of the Moon", sung by the chick who sings backup on some other songs) and a way cool extended mix of "One in their Pride"! That last one's particularly a trip, especially on acid, when I heard the voice "RETURN SAFELY TO EARTH...RETURN SAFELY TO EARTH..." repeating over and over in my mind for about six hours nonstop...

...Oh yes, "Mexican Radio" is a Wall of Voodoo song, remember them? Well it was the first Celtic Frost song I ever heard, and I just about DIED when I first heard it!! Made me an instant fan.

"Cold Lake"

  1. "Human (Intro)" (1:06)
  2. "Seduce Me Tonight" (3:18)
  3. "Petty Obsession" (3:17)
  4. "(Once) They Were Eagles" (3:39)
  5. "Cherry Orchards" (4:19)
  6. "Juices Like Wine" (4:17)
  7. "Little Velvet" (3:40)
  8. "Blood on Kisses" (3:29)
  9. "Downtown Hanoi" (4:15)
  10. "Dance Sleazy" (3:32)
  11. "Roses Without Thorns" (3:26)
  12. "Tease Me" (2:47)
  13. "Mexican Radio"--new version (3:32)

The To Megatherion liner notes said that the album after Pandemonium would be called "Necronomicon" -- nobody can accuse the guys of not planning ahead! Unfortunately, Tom Warrior was hit on the head with a brick before that album could be recorded...at least, that's the only explanation I can think of for why this TOTAL CRAP GLAM ALBUM was released!! First time I saw this I about puked when I saw the band picture...all decked out in Bon Jovi fashions, with spandex & ripped jeans, and one guy's fly completely unzipped (the lineup features Warrior, original drummer Stephen Priestly, and two new losers.) What sucks even harder is that this album went quickly out of print, so I had to special order an import CD for fifteen bucks to finalize my CF collection. "Mexican Radio" is probably the same version that appeared on Parched with Thirst... (haven't listened to it as of this writing.)

"Vanity/Nemesis"

  1. "The Heart Beneath" (3:50)
  2. "Wine in My Hand (Third from the Sun)" (3:26)
  3. "Wings of Solitude" (4:35)
  4. "The Name of My Bride" (4:30)
  5. "This Island Earth" (5:49)
  6. "The Restless Seas" (5:40)
  7. "Phallic Tantrum" (3:31)
  8. "A Kiss or a Whisper" (3:04)
  9. "Vanity" (4:24)
  10. "Nemesis" (7:46)
  11. "Heroes" (3:45)

This album continues in the glam vein, albeit not as unlistenable as the previous one; admittedly I have not listened to it much and only bought the CD to fill up the collection. Interesting, there's a David Bowie song here as a bonus track, never heard of that one before.

"Celtic Frost 1984-1992: Parched with Thirst and I Am Dying"

  1. "Idols of Chagrin" (4:10)
  2. "A Descent to Babylon (Babylon Asleep)" (4:26)
  3. "Return to the Eve"--1985 studio jam (4:06)
  4. "Juices like Wine"--rerecorded 1991 (4:13)
  5. "The Inevitable Factor" (4:45)
  6. "The Heart Beneath" (3:50)
  7. "Cherry Orchards"--radio edit (4:03)
  8. "Tristesses de la Lune" (2:58)
  9. "Wings of Solitude" (4:35)
  10. "The Usurper"--Tragic Serenades version (3:26)
  11. "Journey into Fear" (3:53)
  12. "Downtown Hanoi"--rerecorded 1991 (4:12)
  13. "Circle of the Tyrants"--To Megatherion version (4:36)
  14. "In the Chapel in the Moonlight" (3:50)
  15. "I Won't Dance (Elder's Orient)"--radio edit (3:50)
  16. "The Name of My Bride" (4:30)
  17. "Mexican Radio"--1991 studio jam (3:20)
  18. "Under Apollyon's Sun" (5:34)

A collection of remixed tracks from other albums and rare/unreleased songs, with a few new ones thrown in. Many of the remixes (ESPECIALLY the ones from "Cold Lake") sound better than the originals!
