Dark Angel

Dark Angel's music always stood out from the other thrash metal bands I got into during the late 80's. Yet after 4 outstanding albums (and one not so outstanding live CD), they vanished. Oh well, sometimes it is better that way.

"We Have Arrived"

  1. "We Have Arrived" (4:03)
  2. "Merciless Death" (4:25)
  3. "Falling from the Sky" (4:20)
  4. "Welcome to the Slaughterhouse" (5:10)
  5. "No Tomorrow" (6:27)
  6. "Hell's on It's Knees" (4:10)
  7. "Vendetta" (4:23)

OOOOOHHHHH BAAAAABBYYYY!!!! I GOT IT!!! I GOT THE MOTHERFUCKER!!! THE VERY FIRST DARK ANGEL ALBUM ON CD!!!!! I *never* thought I'd find it! It doesn't have the original artwork, just a dull image of the band logo, and most of the liner notes are written in annoying French, but WHO CARES!! I GOT THE MOTHERFUCKER!!

Oh yeah, "Welcome to the Slaughterhouse" originally appeared on Metal Massacre VI.

"Darkness Descends"

  1. "Darkness Descends" (5:53)
  2. "The Burning of Sodom" (3:18)
  3. "Hunger of the Undead" (4:18)
  4. "Merciless Death" (4:07)
  5. "Death is Certain (Life is Not)" (4:18)
  6. "Black Prophecies" (8:33)
  7. "Perish in Flames" (4:52)

For years I procrastinated in upgrading this album to CD, until it was out of print and couldn't find it ANYWHERE! A friend of mine has it and I suggested he write me into his will to inherit this CD and several others that he has and I desperately want...he refused, saying that if he was to do that, he would not live much longer! (And he's right!!) Then, one day, while browsing through the new section of a record store, I ran across it, in that thick plastic packaging with the booklet separated from the CD, the type of packaging they don't use anymore so I know it had been sitting there for YEARS, just waiting for me! Hmm, maybe there is a God...naah, of course there isn't. A few of these songs were done live for the Ultimate Revenge 2 compilation.

"Leave Scars"

  1. "The Death of Innocence" (3:47)
  2. "Never to Rise Again" (3:53)
  3. "No One Answers" (7:49)
  4. "Cauterization"--instrumental (7:17)
  5. "Immigrant Song" (1:47)
  6. "Older Than Time Itself" (6:57)
  7. "Worms"--instrumental (2:15)
  8. "The Promise of Agony" (8:24)
  9. "Leave Scars" (7:40)

New lead singer, and a much faster, rawer sound. In fact the lyrics are sung so fast the guy only enunciates every third syllable or so! Great music overall, even the hilarious rendition of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song". For a real horrorshow, read the lyrics to "The Death of Innocence", a song about child molestation.

"Live Scars"

  1. "Leave Scars" (9:30)
  2. "The Burning of Sodom" (3:34)
  3. "Never to Rise Again" (4:06)
  4. "Death is Certain (Life is Not)" (3:52)
  5. "The Promise of Agony" (8:45)
  6. "We Have Arrived" (4:00)
  7. "The Death of Innocence" (5:35)
  8. "I Don't Care About You" (3:22)

Oh man, what a pisser. I owned a copy of this CD many years ago, but then got into a hissy fit and sold off just about all my live thrash CDs for no reason I can fathom now. And it's got a cover song ("I Don't Care About You", originally by Fear) on it, for chrissakes!! Well, I did consider buying one of the many copies that showed up in the used bins for a long time, but eventually they all vanished. In the end I wound up getting a copy from eBay for eight bucks. Not bad really, since it was still sealed and came with a Dark Angel sticker inside...yippee.

"Time Does Not Heal"

  1. "Time Does Not Heal" (6:38)
  2. "Pain's Invention, Madness" (7:43)
  3. "Act of Contrition" (6:09)
  4. "The New Priesthood" (7:13)
  5. "Psychosexuality" (8:54)
  6. "An Ancient Inherited Shame" (9:15)
  7. "Trauma and Catharsis" (8:19)
  8. "Sensory Deprivation" (7:34)
  9. "A Subtle Induction" (5:09)

A masterpiece--one of the best thrash-metal CDs ever, with a great range of musical styles and progressive riffs. After this came out, I waited for YEARS for a new release, and only recently discovered that the band has broken up. Sucks how that happens.

Drummer/songwriter Gene Hoglan (who I always felt was the driving creative force behind the band) has continued to play with Death, Testament, and, most recently, Strapping Young Lad.
