Evergrey
This underground prog-metal band is quite a darling among the people of
The Perpetual Motion Conference, so naturally,
I've been avoiding them like the plague. :) But then a friend was showing off his new CD burner,
and ripped a couple album's worth of mp3s to CDR and literally FORCED me to take them home, so
I've got no choice but to review them now. They're not bad, actually...though it does mean
I'll have to upgrade to the real deal someday.
"Solitude Dominance Tragedy" (CDR, mp3 source)
- "Solitude Within" (5:35)
- "Nosferatu" (5:42)
- "The Shocking Truth" (4:37)
- "A Scattered Me" (4:20)
- "She Speaks to the Dead" (5:01)
- "When Darkness Falls" (4:53)
- "Words Mean Nothing" (4:14)
- "Damnation" (3:54)
- "The Corey Curse" (5:23)
Gotta admit, this album's a cut above the nominal dreck provided by prog-power metal bands.
Keyboards and backing vocals are used sparingly and to great affect, and the guitars have a
satisfying CRUNCH which supports the hook-laden vocals and memorable riffs. "Nosferatu" and
"She Speaks to the Dead" are the standout tracks. I'll definitely be upgrading this one to
regular CD someday, when finances permit!
"In Search of Truth" (CDR, mp3 source)
- "The Masterplan" (4:37)
- "Rulers of the Mind" (5:57)
- "Watching the Skies" (6:38)
- "State of Paralysis" (2:15)
- "The Encounter" (4:43)
- "Mark of the Triangle" (6:23)
- "Dark Waters" (6:04)
- "Different Worlds" (5:31)
- "Misled" (6:16)
This is a concept album about alien abductions, and sounds a lot more keyboard-heavy and
not quite as powerful as S.D.T. It's not bad, as far as keyboard-heavy prog metal goes,
but fans of the more crunchy style of power metal might be disappointed. (Unless you're a
PM poster, in which case this band can do
no wrong...hehe.) I'll probably buy it if I can find a decent used copy.
