Hawkwind

I have seen more Hawkwind "best of" collections than any other band on Earth--in fact the Hawkwind FAQ lists over 100 titles! I held out for the original releases, though primarily my interest in the band is limited to the early stuff, when Lemmy of Motörhead was in the band.

"Hawkwind"

  1. "Hurry on Sundown" (4:57)
  2. "The Reason Is?"--instrumental (3:33)
  3. "Be Yourself" (8:13)
  4. "Paranoia (part one)"--instrumental (0:57)
  5. "Paranoia (part two)" (4:12)
  6. "Seeing it as You Really Are"--instrumental (10:42)
  7. "Mirror of Illusion" (6:56)

Only the second REAL Hawkwind CD I've ever found used. "Hurry on Sundown" & "Mirror of Illusion" are songs with a cool late-60's psychedelic/folk feel to them; the rest is basically one big long spacey jam. Lemmy does not appear here.

"In Search of Space" (special remastered edition)

  1. "You Shouldn't Do That" (15:41)
  2. "You Know You're Only Dreaming" (6:36)
  3. "Master of the Universe" (6:17)
  4. "We Took the Wrong Step Years Ago" (4:48)
  5. "Adjust Me" (5:46)
  6. "Children of the Sun" (3:14)
  7. "Seven by Seven"--original single version (5:21)
  8. "Silver Machine"--original single version (4:39)
  9. "Born to Go"--live single version edit (5:05)

"In Search of Space"...?? But I'm right here!! Hehe....

When the "remastered" series came out in 1996, I bought this one right away since I didn't own the crappy vinyl. Figured the others would follow soon, but waited too long and they all went out of print...well, crap. This is a damn trippy album, obviously written with LSD in mind!! "Master of the Universe" is by far their COOLEST song ever! (Although I was used to the version on the "official bootleg" In the Beginning; this version sounds much different.) I'm not sure if Lemmy's on this one, too lazy to get up off my ass and check. :)

"Doremi Fasol Latido"

  1. "Brainstorm" (11:33)
  2. "Space is Deep" (6:20)
  3. "One Change"--instrumental (0:49)
  4. "Lord of Light" (6:59)
  5. "Down Through the Night" (3:04)
  6. "Time We Left This World Today" (8:43)
  7. "The Watcher" (4:09)

A classic early Hawkwind album, and the only one still in print, apparently... For some reason, the CD omits "Silver Machine" from the crappy vinyl version, dunno why it was left off but at least I got it on the In Search of Space remaster. (This copy isn't from the Remastered series, I waited too long to buy those so they all went out of print, but I don't care SO FUCKIN' SUE ME......) "The Watcher" is a creepy acoustic tune written & sung by Lemmy; the version he recorded for Motorhead sounds MUCH different!

"Hall of the Mountain Grill"

  1. "The Psychedelic Warlords (Disappear in Smoke)" (7:21)
  2. "Wind of Change"--instrumental (4:36)
  3. "D-Rider" (6:14)
  4. "Web Weaver" (3:09)
  5. "You'd Better Believe It" (7:14)
  6. "Hall of the Mountain Grill"--instrumental (2:23)
  7. "Lost Johnny" (3:28)
  8. "Goat Willow"--instrumental (1:37)
  9. "Paradox" (5:25)

One of the rarest early Hawkwind CDs, and one I had to hunt down on eBay, since it's long been out of print. (Some guy wanted $25 for the remastered version, well I said screw THAT music and bought this for $12 instead.) And speaking of remasters, I'm feeling kinda silly for not investing in them beyond In Search of Space...oh well, guess I can always say I didn't like the non-standard packaging. "Lost Johnny" is another song that became a Motorhead tune.

"Warrior on the Edge of Time"

  1. "Assault & Battery part I" (5:36)
  2. "The Golden Void part II" (4:37)
  3. "The Wizard Blew His Horn" (1:57)
  4. "Opa-Loka" (5:12)
  5. "The Demented Man" (3:57)
  6. "Magnu" (8:22)
  7. "Standing at the Edge" (2:40)
  8. "Spiral Galaxy 28948" (3:46)
  9. "Warriors" (1:58)
  10. "Dying Seas" (3:05)
  11. "Kings of Speed" (3:32)
  12. "Motorhead" (3:02)

This was the first "real" Hawkwind CD that I ever found used. Lots of sci-fi themes here, well what else do you expect when one of the band members is Michael Moorcock, a science fiction writer! "Motorhead"--yes, THAT "Motorhead"--is a bonus track, sung by Lemmy, of course.

"Live Chronicles"

  1. "Song of the Swords" (3:14)
  2. "Dragons and Fables" (3:09)
  3. "Narration"--spoken word (0:48)
  4. "The Sea King" (3:47)
  5. "Angels of Death" (4:45)
  6. "Shade Gate"--instrumental (3:53)
  7. "Rocky Paths" (2:51)
  8. "Narration"--spoken word (1:18)
  9. "The Pulsing Cavern"--instrumental (1:53)
  10. "Master of the Universe" (3:55)
  11. "Dreaming City" (4:23)
  12. "Choose Your Masques" (4:55)
  13. "Fight Sequence" (3:27)
  14. "Needle Gun" (4:08)
  15. "Zarozinia" (4:11)
  16. "Lords of Chaos" (1:03)
  17. "The Dark Lords"
    "Wizards of Pan Tang" (total=3:25)
  18. "Moonglum (Friend Without a Cause)" (4:43)
  19. "Elric the Enchanter" (2:30)
  20. "Conjuration of Magnu" (1:52)
  21. "Magnu" (3:14)
  22. "Dust of Time"--instrumental (2:56)
  23. "Horn of Fate" (6:01)

A 2-disc version with extra songs does exist, but with post-Lemmy Hawkwind I'm less picky. One thing does confuse me, though: although 24 tracks are listed, the CD only has *23* tracks; my guess is that "Wizards of Pan Tang" got edited down to make the whole thing fit on one CD! Hmm, maybe I should get the 2CD version after all...
