Jimi Hendrix
Okay, I'll fess up...the REAL reason I've put off acquiring any Hendrix CDs (until now) is
because of the daunting task of hunting down EVERY SINGLE MENTION OF HIS NAME in these Galleries,
and adding a link to this page!!! (I've been working on it all day and I'm *still* not sure if
I found them all...) That, and the fact that the local rock stations play his music just about
every second of the day, so if I'm really in the mood for Hendrix (which is rare), I just need
to switch on the radio. (Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers are in the same boat, in this regard.)

Well, not much to say really, it's all of Jimi's best-known hits, as well as some lesser-known
tracks. Pretty damn good compilation, actually -- but I think I'm going to go ahead and buy
all three of his studio albums individually, esp. since "If 6 Was 9" does not appear here.
(Which is why I accepted a cdr copy, for the time being.)
Okay, now the big question..."Which of these songs have been covered by other artists?" HA!!
An exhaustive list would be a hundred pages long. Let me just write down the ones I know from
memory (which will help me find where the links back to this page belong, hehe):
- "All Along the Watchtower" - originally a Bob Dylan song, but even Dylan himself called
Jimi's the "definitive version" of his song. It's been covered by U2.
- "Purple Haze" - covered by Coroner, The Cure,
and Ozzy Osbourne.
- "Hey Joe" - covered by Body Count and Deep
Purple.
- "The Wind Cries Mary" - covered by Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora
(and I think he sings on it, too) on the soundtrack for
The Adventures of Ford Fairlane.
- "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" - covered (as part of a drunken binge medley) by
Overkill.
- "Foxy Lady" - covered by The Cure.
- "Red House" - covered by Great White.
- "Manic Depression" - covered by Kings X.
- "Little Wing" - covered by Skid Row and Sting.
- "Fire" - covered by a lot of people, but I don't think I have any in my collection, though --
I seem to remember Dennis DeYoung (of Styx) doing a hilarious cover on his
debut solo album Desert Moon, though.
- "Star Spangled Banner", "Wild Thing" - well...as these two are "covers" already, and have
been endlessly performed by other artists, I won't bother making any links...except to
say, while everyone hails Jimi's Woodstock performance of the American National Anthem as the
greatest ever, I'm somewhat partial to the Roseanne Barr version. :)
