Elton John

Hey, don't laugh! I like Elton John's music too, even though it's even quieter and wimpier than Billy Joel's...actually that's not true, some of his early stuff really kicks ass. I could care less about his newer pop material, though. Elton finally admitted to being gay in 1992 or so, probably the LEAST surprising event in musical history...

"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"

  1. "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" (11:07)
  2. "Candle in the Wind" (3:49)
  3. "Bennie and the Jets" (5:23)
  4. "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" (3:13)
  5. "This Song Has No Title" (2:23)
  6. "Grey Seal" (4:00)
  7. "Jamaica Jerk-Off" (3:38)
  8. "I've Seen That Movie Too" (6:00)
  9. "Sweet Painted Lady" (3:54)
  10. "The Ballad of Danny Bailey (1909-34)" (4:23)
  11. "Dirty Little Girl" (5:01)
  12. "All the Girls Love Alice" (5:09)
  13. "Your Sister Can't Twist (But She Can Rock 'n Roll)" (2:41)
  14. "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" (4:55)
  15. "Roy Rogers" (4:07)
  16. "Social Disease" (3:42)
  17. "Harmony" (2:46)

I'm not sure if I am going to collect all of Elton's early albums or stick with the greatest hits collections. This CD has some classic tunes, especially the epic "Funeral/Love Lies" (which has been covered by Dream Theater...they've also covered the title track as well) and the powerhouse rocker "Saturday Night" (which was covered by Flotsam & Jetsam) -- the lesser-known songs really aren't that great, though. "Candle in the Wind", on the other hand, is one of the most beautiful songs ever made, and it really brought tears to my eyes when Elton dedicated it to Ryan White...and bile to my throat when he rewrote it for Princess Diana's funeral!! UCK!!!

"Elton John's Greatest Hits Vol. 2"

  1. "The Bitch is Back" (3:39)
  2. "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" (5:57)
  3. "Tiny Dancer" (6:13)
  4. "I Feel Like a Bullet (in the Gun of Robert Ford)" (5:28)
  5. "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" (6:43)
  6. "Philadelphia Freedom" (5:20)
  7. "Island Girl" (3:43)
  8. "Grow Some Funk of Your Own" (4:16)
  9. "Levon" (5:21)
  10. "Pinball Wizard" (5:11)

Some good songs here, although there are a few groaners...as a result I don't think I'll ever get the albums from this period. The standout track here is "Pinball Wizard", a cover of The Who's song, from the movie version of Tommy.
