Kyuss

The progenitor of "stoner rock", though I preferred my term, "psychedelic grunge". Several members went on to form the band Queens of the Stone Age.

"Blues for the Red Sun"

  1. "Thumb" (4:41)
  2. "Green Machine" (3:38)
  3. "Molten Universe" (2:49)
  4. "50 Million Year Trip (Downside Up)" (5:52)
  5. "Thong Song" (3:47)
  6. "Apothecaries' Weight"--instrumental (5:21)
  7. "Caterpillar March" (1:56)
  8. "Freedom Run" (7:37)
  9. "800"--instrumental (1:34)
  10. "Writhe" (3:42)
  11. "Capsized" (0:55)
  12. "Allen's Wrench" (2:44)
  13. "Mondo Generator" (6:15)
  14. "Yeah" (0:04)

This CD makes a GREAT road tape. "Apothecaries' Weight" is supposedly a Grateful Dead cover, but hell if I ever heard of it...

"Welcome to Sky Valley"

    I.
  1. "Gardenia"
  2. "Asteroid"
  3. "Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop" (total=17:46)
    II.
  1. "100°"
  2. "Space Cadet"
  3. "Demon Cleaner" (total=14:50)
    III.
  1. "Odyssey"
  2. "Conan Troutman"
  3. "N.O."
  4. "Whitewater" (total=18:19)

Annoying how this CD is arranged into three large tracks, isn't it? Well it's some great music anyway.

"...And the Circus Leaves Town"

  1. "Hurricane" (2:41)
  2. "One Inch Man" (3:30)
  3. "Thee of Boozeroony" (2:47)
  4. "Gloria Lewis" (4:02)
  5. "Phototropic" (5:13)
  6. "El Rodeo" (5:35)
  7. "Jumbo Blimp Jumbo" (4:39)
  8. "Tangy Zizzle" (2:39)
  9. "Size Queen" (3:46)
  10. "Catamaran" (2:59)
  11. "Spaceship Landing" (11:13)
  12. "Day One"--unlisted, end of track #11 (1:50)

There isn't a lot of change here from the band's previous works, and on the whole this CD is sort of tired-sounding. Not bad, but not great. The band broke up shortly after releasing this one.

"Queens of the Stone Age"

  1. "Into the Void" (8:00)
  2. "Fatso Forgotso" (8:33)
  3. "Fatso Forgotso Phase II" (2:17)
  4. "If Only Everything" (3:32)
  5. "Born to Hula" (5:05)
  6. "Spiders and Vinegaroons"--instrumental (6:24)

Ok, this one's apparently a transition EP, with the first 3 songs by Kyuss, and the last 3 by "Queens of the Stone Age", the band formed out of the ashes of Kyuss. The QOTSA songs are quite raw and experimental, not quite entertaining enough to pursue the band's further efforts...in any case, I only got this one for their cover version of Black Sabbath's "Into the Void".
