Napalm Death

When one thinks of grindcore (or "gutter death metal", as I call it) all eyes turn to Napalm Death. At least two other groups--Carcass and Godflesh--can trace their roots back to this band, which has been playing English clubs since the early 1980's!

Say, have you been searching for the ultra-rare Napalm Death single "Nazi Punks Fuck Off"? Well...I GOT THE MOTHERFUCKER!!!!! There's also the song "Internal Animosity" on the Pathological Compilation, but I'm not sure if it's exclusive.

This album certainly shows where the "core" in "grindcore" came from! Gutter-death thrash, short songs, mostly awful stuff. Originally, the greedy record company broke up this debut album into 2 separate CDs, in order to bilk more money out of the public. Thankfully, I happened across this special release, with the FULL 54-track listing! Rather badly scratched up but worth it anyway.

This album burst the group onto the scene, and onto MTv's Headbanger's Ball, where "Suffer the Children" became their pop hit single. :) Traumatic, brutal music, with an EXCELLENT drummer! I really like this one.

The older songs, of course, are rather sloppy and growly ("Mentally Murdered" made me laugh, the first time I heard it.) Oh yeah, a pox on the record company, which recently rereleased the CD with TWICE as many songs! They REALLY should consult me before doing shit like this!!

Another good ND album, sounding a lot like Harmony...in fact, Napalm Death's albums all tend to sound alike, don't they? "World Keeps Turning" is the best song here.

I held out for the digipack edition which contains two bonus tracks, not realizing that they were already included on the "Breed to Breathe" EP. D'oh! At least it was free. The music itself is quite a surprise, as the band gives up generic grindcore for...nu-metal! Okay, not exactly -- but it's certainly more progressive and industrial than anything they've done in the past. Even sounds like Prong, in parts.

"Breed to Breathe" kind of recycles the "Greed Killing" riff, while the other four songs are standard ND stuff. Impending Doom's "Greed Killing" apparently was the winner of some Napalm Death cover version contest...I'm horrified to think what the losing songs sounded like. :) Oh, and there's a pretty cool Enhanced CD-Rom portion which includes the "Breed to Breathe" video, supposedly "Banned on Seven Continents!" Funny, didn't think Antarctica had censorship laws...
