When one thinks of grindcore (or "gutter death metal", as I call it) all eyes turn to
Napalm Death. At least two other groups--Carcass and
Godflesh--can trace their roots back to this band, which has been
playing English clubs since the early 1980's!
Say, have you been searching for the ultra-rare Napalm Death single "Nazi Punks Fuck
Off"? Well...I GOT THE MOTHERFUCKER!!!!! There's also
the song "Internal Animosity" on the Pathological
Compilation, but I'm not sure if it's exclusive.

This album certainly shows where the "core" in "grindcore" came from! Gutter-death thrash,
short songs, mostly awful stuff. Originally, the greedy record company broke up this debut
album into 2 separate CDs, in order to bilk more money out of the public. Thankfully, I
happened across this special release, with the FULL 54-track listing! Rather badly scratched
up but worth it anyway.
"Harmony Corruption"
- "Vision Conquest" (2:42)
- "If the Truth Be Known" (4:11)
- "Inner Incineration" (2:56)
- "Malicious Intent" (3:26)
- "Unfit Earth" (5:03)
- "Circle of Hypocrisy" (3:15)
- "The Chains that Bind Us" (4:07)
- "Mind Snare" (3:41)
- "Extremity Retained" (2:01)
- "Suffer the Children" (4:21)
- "Hiding Behind" (5:15)
This album burst the group onto the scene, and onto MTv's Headbanger's Ball, where
"Suffer the Children" became their pop hit single. :) Traumatic, brutal music, with an
EXCELLENT drummer! I really like this one.
"Death by Manipulation"
- "Mass Appeal Madness" (3:29)
- "Pride Assassin" (2:05)
- "Unchallenged Hate" (2:06)
- "Social Sterility" (1:11)
- "Suffer the Children" (4:21)
- "Siege of Power" (3:32)
- "Harmony Corruption" (3:31)
- "Rise Above" (2:39)
- "The Missing Link" (2:15)
- "Mentally Murdered" (2:08)
- "Walls of Confinement" (2:54)
- "Cause & Effect" (1:24)
- "No Mental Effort" (4:07)
Sort of a compilation of various EPs thrown together in the wake of Harmony
Corruption's success. The older songs, of course, are rather sloppy and growly ("Mentally
Murdered" made me laugh, the first time I heard it.) Oh yeah, a pox on the record company,
which recently rereleased the CD with TWICE as many songs! They REALLY should consult me
before doing shit like this!!
"Utopia Banished"
- "Discordance"--instrumental (1:25)
- "I Abstain" (3:30)
- "Dementia Access" (2:26)
- "Christening of the Blind" (3:20)
- "The World Keeps Turning" (2:54)
- "Idiosyncratic" (2:35)
- "Aryanisms" (3:07)
- "Cause and Effect, Pt. II" (2:06)
- "Judicial Slime" (2:36)
- "Distorting the Medium" (1:57)
- "Got Time to Kill" (2:27)
- "Upward and Uninterested" (2:06)
- "Exile" (1:59)
- "Awake (to a Life of Misery)" (2:05)
- "Contemptuous" (4:21)
Another good ND album, sounding a lot like Harmony...in fact, Napalm Death's albums
all tend to sound alike, don't they? "World Keeps Turning" is the best song here.
"Fear, Emptiness, Despair"
- "Twist the Knife (Slowly)" (2:54)
- "Hung" (3:49)
- "Remain Nameless" (3:34)
- "Plague Rages" (3:51)
- "More Than Meets the Eye" (3:55)
- "Primed Time" (3:29)
- "State of Mind" (3:32)
- "Armageddon X 7" (3:17)
- "Retching in the Dirt" (2:59)
- "Fasting on Deception" (3:50)
- "Throwaway" (3:42)
Yet another Napalm Death album, with fast brutal & growly songs that sound totally
indistinguishable from one another.
"Greed Killing" (EP)
- "Greed Killing" (3:06)
- "My Own Worst Enemy" (3:36)
- "Self Betrayal" (4:38)
- "Finer Truths, White Lies" (2:59)
- "Antibody" (2:51)
- "All Links Severed" (2:40)
- "Plague Rages"--live (3:48)
An EP released prior to their CD Diatribes, which I don't have yet. "Greed
Killing" is an interesting song, with a thrash riff totally unlike anything the band has done
before! The rest is standard ND trash...er, I mean thrash. :)
"In Tongues We Speak" (split EP w/ Coalesce)
- "Food Chains" (3:14)
- "A Safe Place"--Coalesce (2:53)
- "Upward and Uninterested"--demo version (2:24)
- "Harvest of Maturity"--Coalesce (3:44)
A "split" EP with two Napalm Death songs and two songs by some industrial-ish grindcore
band called Coalesce. Something of a rarity, I think.
"Inside the Torn Apart" (digipack w/ bonus tracks)
- "Breed to Breathe" (3:15)
- "Birth in Recess" (3:32)
- "Section" (2:45)
- "Reflect on Conflict" (3:14)
- "Down in the Zero" (3:09)
- "Inside the Torn Apart" (3:45)
- "If Symptoms Persist" (2:41)
- "Prelude" (3:11)
- "Indispose" (3:04)
- "Purist Realist" (2:58)
- "Lowpoint" (3:15)
- "The Lifeless Alarm" (4:39)
- "Time Will Come" (3:21)
- "Bred Dry" (2:21)
I held out for the digipack edition which contains two bonus tracks, not realizing that
they were already included on the "Breed to Breathe" EP. D'oh! At least it was free.
The music itself is quite a surprise, as the band gives up generic grindcore for...nu-metal!
Okay, not exactly -- but it's certainly more progressive and industrial than anything they've
done in the past. Even sounds like Prong, in parts.
"Breed to Breathe" (EP)
- "Breed to Breathe" (3:15)
- "All Intensive Purposes" (3:23)
- "Stranger Now" (3:46)
- "Bled Dry" (2:21)
- "Time Will Come" (3:22)
- "Greed Killing"--Impending Doom (2:54)
"Breed to Breathe" kind of recycles the "Greed Killing"
riff, while the other four songs are standard ND stuff. Impending Doom's "Greed Killing"
apparently was the winner of some Napalm Death cover version contest...I'm horrified to
think what the losing songs sounded like. :) Oh, and there's a pretty cool Enhanced CD-Rom
portion which includes the "Breed to Breathe" video, supposedly "Banned on Seven Continents!"
Funny, didn't think Antarctica had censorship laws...
