"Straight Outta Compton" (CDR + bonus tracks)Where it all started. Seriously, when this unknown, underground rap band released this album, it was like a BOMB going off in the music world. Like the title track says, "Comin' straight from the underground..." -- how prescient! And everyone's favorite tune, "Fuck the Police", earned the band an FBI investigation as well. It made the members of N.W.A. overnight superstars, and in no small way put modern rap music on the map.
Unfortunately, as well all know, money changes people, and often NOT for the better. The only member with a truly moral soul, Ice Cube, quit the band shortly after this album went multi-platinum, and indeed, he proved to be only original member who wasn't just a money-grubbing bitch at heart. The other key member, Dr. Dre, grew to become one of the biggest names in rap music, and co-founded "Death Row Records" with O.G. Suge Knight, and was one of the key "anti" voices during the whole Napster scandal, even worse than Metallica, in my opinion!! (He's the one who made the asinine comment, "Napster is stealing food from my children's table!" -- yeah RIGHT, if you're too fucking poor to feed your fucking children, they fucking DESERVE to starve, you bitch!!) Indeed, that played a big factor in my decision to settle for a CDR copy of this disc, since Dr. Dre is on the "download only" list along with Metallica & Garth Brooks. It's not that big an issue, since I never liked the guy to begin with...and rap music sucks anyway. :)
The 3rd biggest member, Easy-E, didn't last very long...he fucked one too many skanks and came down with AIDS, and died right quick. Which is sad, if you think about it. I wish he'd lingered and suffered longer.
Indeed, the band's followup EP, Niggaz4life, proved that not only was Ice Cube the soul of the band, he was the sole member with any creative talent, too. The proof in the pudding was the song "Sa Prize!", which is essentially a 9-minute remix of "Fuck the Police"!! Didn't take 'em long to become complete sellout bitch pussies, didn't it?? (I did snarf the intro, though, which depicts a gangsta "payback" against crooked cops...mostly for the police officer's line, "Oh shut up and pass me another donut!" ROFLMAO....)
Also included on this CDR are three songs from the "CB4" movie soundtrack, which tried to be a rap version of This Is Spinal Tap, but failed miserably. The songs were pretty funny, though. But what's really interesting is the story of how we saw this movie in the first place (yeah, I can hear you all rolling your eyes from here...just deal with it ok?) For some insane reason, my rap-loving roommate and a few other homiez decided that in order to REALLY experience this movie, was to drive down to a COMPTON drive-in. Sounds crazy, right?? Well, you'd think so...except it was no problem at all. In fact, after the movie ended, my car's battery was dead, but a couple brotha's went around the lot jump-starting other people's cars, including mine. It didn't matter at all that we were obviously suburban types with skin white as jizzum. Coz it ain't about that. (And you would NEVER find someone that willing to help people out in the "white" neighborhoods!!) So while the movie really did suck, the trip itself was worth it, because it's one of my favorite stories to tell people. (The only negative part was when I pulled off the freeway in South Central L.A. -- I was blasting something really gay like "Close to the Edge" by Yes, and my roommate started screaming at me to switch tapes, because "Our lives may depend on it! Seriously!!" So I put in a tape by Public Enemy instead. :))
