The Quiet Room

It's my firm belief that 90% of all progressive-metal bands are clones of either Dream Theater or Fates Warning. This band falls squarely into the Fates category.

  5. "Drowning" (5:29)
  6. "Laughing at Your Expense" (3:53)
  7. "Holding On" (4:31)
  8. "Extramental"--instrumental (3:22)
  9. "Suspended Seconds" (2:32)
  10. "Undetermined" (4:44)

Sloppy, lethargic, mid-tempo progmetal that sounds for all the world like a bunch of outtakes from Perfect Symmetry. These guys literally worship Alder & Matheos, don't they??? A few good ideas here and there, but the muddy, distorted production drags it down a couple of notches.

The follow-up, Reconceive, was actually a little bit better, and more original (since they hired a new lead singer that DOESN'T sound like Ray Alder!) -- unfortunately, Metal Blade's quality control staff fell asleep on the job and released the CD with MASSIVE mastering flaws & skips!!! I'm not even sure if they bothered to fix the problem, since every CD I've listened to (including the one I bought and didn't notice was defective for over two years) has had those flaws...and since the band has long broken up, there doesn't seem to be any financial incentive to fix it. I'm sure they blame Napster, too.
