Saint Vitus

One of the world's first "doom metal" bands -- they took the slowest, doomiest aspects from Black Sabbath's first 2 albums, amped it to the max, and thus a new genre of heavy metal was born.

"Saint Vitus"

  1. "Saint Vitus" (4:46)
  2. "White Magic/Black Magic" (5:26)
  3. "Zombie Hunger" (7:16)
  4. "The Psychopath" (9:24)
  5. "Burial at Sea" (8:37)

REISSUED AT LAST!!! Oh man, this is a classic album. Slower than molasses, with bass guitar & drums so loud & heavy that my entire apartment building shakes when I play it. GREAT for annoying the neighbors. :-))))

"Hallow's Victim/The Walking Dead" (CDR, cassette dub)

  1. "War is Our Destiny" (4:12)
  2. "White Stallions" (5:27)
  3. "Mystic Lady" (7:45)
  4. "Hallow's Victim" (2:46)
  5. "The Sadist" (4:01)
  6. "Just Friends (Empty Love)" (5:47)
  7. "Prayer for the (M)asses" (5:27)
  8. "Darkness" (3:31)
  9. "White Stallions" (5:30)
  10. "The Walking Dead" (11:40)

Ack, serves me right for not paying attention. Apparently, this LP/EP combo was released on BOOTLEG CD in October 2001...and immediately went out of print, of course! I'm not even sure if this particular recording came from that bootleg, or was self-made by someone else. For one thing, there's no artwork. (But that didn't stop the trader from intimating that it had artwork he could copy for me, and therefore I offered a 1:2 ratio for trade -- only to receive a stupid tiny B&W scan of the Walking Dead cover art, not even the right size to use as a CD sleeve! And, of course, the dickhead then claimed that he never said it had artwork, in defiance of several emails I have proving otherwise. Fucking asshole!! Well, live and learn I guess...)

But none of that really matters, because wherever this boot came from, it's an excellent cassette dub. And the music itself rivals the band's debut album in quality, in no small part due to the fact that this was the last album(s) to feature original singer Scott Reagers. (Aside from that crappy reunion on Die Healing, see below.) The 12-minute final track is one HELL of a doom metal monster!!! Of course, now I've gotta work on finding a REAL silver copy of this album...if it even exists...

Oh, and the two versions of "White Stallions" are exactly the same, as far as I can tell.

"Born Too Late"

  1. "Born Too Late" (6:52)
  2. "Clear Windowpane" (3:14)
  3. "Dying Inside" (7:23)
  4. "H.A.A.G." (5:02)
  5. "The Lost Feeling" (5:22)
  6. "The War Starter" (6:43)
  7. "Thirsty and Miserable" (3:51)
  8. "Look Behind You" (3:18)
  9. "The End of the End" (5:49)

I spent a long time waiting to find a version of this CD that included their Thirsty and Miserable EP, only to find out ALL versions of this CD include it... The music's just as slow, fuzzy & doomy as before, but for some unknown reason they had to recruit a new lead singer, who's voice just doesn't cut it. Still, it's worth a listen.

"Mournful Cries"

  1. "The Creeps" (2:47)
  2. "Dragon Time" (7:24)
  3. "Shooting Gallery" (6:44)
  4. "Bitter Truth" (4:12)
  5. "The Troll" (6:54)
  6. "Looking Glass" (4:49)

The rarest of all St. Vitus CDs; somebody offered to sell me his copy for $40, but that was asking WAY too much. Good thing I turned him down, too, because I found a used copy for $5.99 about six months later. Surprisingly, this one's a helluva lot better than I remember from the original crappy vinyl. Very doomy, reasonably good vocals, a great album all around. Kinda short, though.

"V"

  1. "Living Backwards" (2:31)
  2. "I Bleed Black" (5:14)
  3. "When Emotion Dies" (2:10)
  4. "Patra (Petra)" (7:33)
  5. "Ice Monkey" (4:01)
  6. "Jack Frost" (7:25)
  7. "Angry Man" (4:29)
  8. "Mind-Food" (3:11)

Not sure if the title stands for the letter "V" (as in "Vitus"?) or if it indicates this is their fifth album. No matter, the music is weak overall, made worse by really crappy vocals. (The vocalist's name is "Wino", and believe me, it's appropriate!) They do manage a few nice doomy riffs here and there, but that's it. A mere collection-filler.

"C.O.D."

  1. "Intro" (1:46)
  2. "Children of Doom" (6:09)
  3. "Planet of Judgement" (7:39)
  4. "Shadow of a Skeleton" (5:56)
  5. "(I Am) The Screaming Banshee" (3:49)
  6. "Plague of Man" (8:01)
  7. "Imagination Man" (4:24)
  8. "Fear" (5:00)
  9. "Get Away" (7:22)
  10. "Bela" (5:57)
  11. "A Timeless Tale" (2:16)
  12. "Hallow's Victim (Exhumed)" (4:02)

Picked this one up for 99 cents, which is about what it's worth. Uninspired, directionless doom metal, sounding all too truly like a band past its prime. They're on their third lead singer here, too.

"Die Healing"

  1. "Dark World" (4:55)
  2. "One Mind" (4:32)
  3. "Let the End Begin" (7:36)
  4. "Trail of Pestilence" (5:10)
  5. "Sloth" (8:11)
  6. "Return of the Zombie" (6:41)
  7. "In the Asylum" (8:10)
  8. "Just Another Notch" (4:30)

Original singer Scott Reagers returned for this '94 release. It's actually not that bad (once you get past the shitty vocals of the opening track); still, it doesn't hold a candle to their early works. I think the band broke up for good after this one.
