Sepultura

One of the best Brazilian heavy metal bands of all time...hmm, actually one of the ONLY Brazilian heavy metal bands of all time! Sadly, internal strife has forced Max Cavalera out of the group, and although the remaining members have pressed on, I can't say I'm too fond of their new sound. However Cavalera's new band Soufly (as well as his previous side project Nailbomb) sounds pretty good.

"Morbid Visions/Bestial Devastation"

  1. "Morbid Visions" (3:23)
  2. "Mayhem" (3:15)
  3. "Troops of Doom" (3:21)
  4. "War" (5:32)
  5. "Crucifixion" (5:02)
  6. "Show Me the Wrath" (3:52)
  7. "Funeral Rites" (4:23)
  8. "Empire of the Damned" (4:24)
  9. "The Curse" (0:39)
  10. "Bestial Devastation" (3:06)
  11. "Antichrist" (3:46)
  12. "Necromancer" (3:52)
  13. "Warriors of Death" (4:07)

Their debut album + their debut EP. Pretty good death metal here.

"Schizophrenia"

  1. "Intro" (0:31)
  2. "From the Past Comes the Storms" (4:55)
  3. "To the Wall" (5:36)
  4. "Escape to the Void" (4:38)
  5. "Inquisition Symphony"--instrumental (7:13)
  6. "Screams Behind the Shadows" (4:48)
  7. "Septic Schizo" (4:31)
  8. "The Abyss" (1:01)
  9. "R.I.P. (Rest in Pain)" (4:36)
  10. "Troops of Doom"--remix (3:17)

One of their best albums, which went unreleased in America for a long time until after Arise made them household names. (At least, I think that's the story.) Shades of Metallica's Ride the Lightning are evident here, especially on the "Inquisition Symphony" instrumental, which sounds almost exactly like "The Call of Ktulu"! "Troops of Doom" is a remix which sounds completely different from the version on their first album.

"Beneath the Remains"

  1. "Beneath the Remains" (5:11)
  2. "Inner Self" (5:07)
  3. "Stronger than Hate" (5:50)
  4. "Mass Hypnosis" (4:22)
  5. "Sarcastic Existence" (4:43)
  6. "Slaves of Pain" (4:00)
  7. "Lobotomy" (4:55)
  8. "Hungry" (4:28)
  9. "Primitive Future" (3:08)

Another great album from their death-metal beginnings.

"Arise"

  1. "Arise" (3:17)
  2. "Dead Embryonic Cells" (4:51)
  3. "Desperate Cry" (6:40)
  4. "Murder" (3:26)
  5. "Subtraction" (4:48)
  6. "Altered State" (6:33)
  7. "Under Siege (Regnum Irae)" (4:53)
  8. "Meaningless Moments" (4:40)
  9. "Infected Voice" (3:19)

"Dead Embryonic Cells" became a modest video hit on MTv's Headbanger's Ball, which is how I rediscovered the band (and everyone else, apparently.) I really wasn't impressed with the rest of the album, although it does contain a few really good songs.

"Dead Embryonic Cells" (single)

  1. "Dead Embroyinc Cells" (4:31)
  2. "Orgasmatron" (4:13)
  3. "Troops of Doom"--remix (3:21)

"Orgasmatron" is a cover of the Motorhead song, which simply ROCKS...it's even better than the original, I think! MUST be played at full volume with the windows rolled down. The "Troops of Doom" remix is the same as the Schizophrenia version. This single's pretty much redundant since buying Roots of Sepultura, and I'd even consider selling it, but since it's HARDLY rare (lists for $6 at CDNow) there just isn't any point...

"Third World Posse"

  1. "Dead Embryonic Cells" (4:32)
  2. "Drug Me" (1:50)
  3. "Inner Self"--live (4:44)
  4. "Troops of Doom"--live (2:56)
  5. "Orgasmatron"--live (4:12)

A rare, Australian-only import EP, which I was lucky to find used for a mere $4.99!! (Of course, checking the eBay prices proved it's really not THAT rare...either that or Sepultura doesn't move well on eBay.) As far as my collection is concerned, the only exclusive track is a live version of "Orgasmatron", and I even had to call a friend from the record store to check my webpage & make sure I didn't already have it. Just one of the many advantages of having your entire CD collection online. :))

"Chaos A.D."

  1. "Refuse/Resist" (3:19)
  2. "Territory" (4:45)
  3. "Slave New World" (2:54)
  4. "Amen" (4:24)
  5. "Kaiowas"--instrumental (3:32)
  6. "Propaganda" (3:31)
  7. "Biotech is Godzilla" (1:52)
  8. "Nomad" (4:58)
  9. "We Who Are Not as Others" (3:43)
  10. "Manifest" (4:55)
  11. "The Hunt" (3:58)
  12. "Clenched Fist" (4:57)

A magnificent album, classic in all respects, finally moving the band away from their death-metal roots into more progressive thrash. My favorite song here is "The Hunt", which is apparently a cover of some punk song (no wonder it sounded so different from the rest...)

"Roots of Sepultura"

    disc one:
  1. "Roots Bloody Roots" (3:32)
  2. "Attitude" (4:15)

  5. "Breed Apart" (4:01)

  13. "Ambush" (4:39)
  14. "Endangered Species" (5:19)
  15. "Dictatorshit" (1:26)
  16. "Canyon Jam"--instrumental, hidden track (13:16)
    disc two:
  1. "Intro"--instrumental (1:33)
  2. "C.I.U. (Criminals in Uniform)" (4:17)

  7. "Under Siege (Regnum Irae)"--original mix (4:44)

  10. "A Hora E A Vez Do Cabelo Nascer" (2:21)
  11. "Drug Me" (1:53)
  12. "Crucificados Pelo Sistema" (1:03)
  13. "Anticop"--live (3:02)
  14. "Intro"--instrumental, live (1:30)
  15. "Arise"--live (2:51)
  16. "Inner Self"--live (4:42)
  17. "Mass Hypnosis"--live (4:25)
  18. "Escape to the Void"--live (5:03)
  19. "Troops of Doom"--live (2:53)
  20. "Altered State"--live (5:20)

Roots was a VICIOUS follow-up to Chaos A.D., with a blistering opening track that evokes shades of Godflesh. Lots of tribal rhythms and chanting are peppered through all the songs, hence the "Roots" title I guess... A live version of "Attitude" appears on the Ozzfest Live CD.

I didn't buy the CD for a long time, mainly because a used copy never showed up...until one day I ran across this special 2-CD release for something like $15.99. Would you believe I DIDN'T BUY IT??? A day later I realized my mistake and went back to get it, but of course it was gone already. So, as punishment, I shelled out fifty bucks to get it from CDNow (and they were supposed to give me a $10 discount, and DIDN'T!) Never mind that there's only two tracks here (demos & live versions aside) that I don't already have, it's just one of those things you gotta do...

"Blood-Rooted"

  1. "Procreation (of the Wicked)" (3:39)
  2. "Inhuman Nature" (3:11)
  3. "Policia" (1:47)
  4. "War" (6:39)
  5. "Crucificados Pelo Sistema" (1:04)
  6. "Symptom of the Universe" (4:15)
  7. "Mine" (6:25)
  8. "Lookaway"--Master Vibe Mix (5:35)
  9. "Dusted"--demo version (4:27)
  10. "Roots Bloody Roots"--demo version (3:32)
  11. "Drug Me" (1:54)
  12. "Refuse/Resist"--live (3:50)
  13. "Slave New World"--live (3:06)
  14. "Propoganda"--live (3:25)
  15. "Beneath the Remains/Escape to the Void"--live (3:48)
  16. "Kaiowas"--live (2:18)
  17. "Clenched Fist"--live (3:38)
  18. "Biotech is Godzilla"--live (2:09)

Well, the good part about a band breaking up in their prime is that you get deluged with compilations of their rare & unreleased songs which wound have cost hundreds of dollars to collect otherwise. Of primary interest here is "Procreation of the Wicked", a Celtic Frost cover song, which I was just about to spend $20 on the "Roots Bloody Roots" import single -- good thing I didn't, because it turned out to be disappointingly lame. However the song "Policia" allowed me to dispose of my "Territory" single, although of course I'm still keeping my Nativity in Black: A Tribute to Black Sabbath, which is where "Symptom of the Universe" first appeared (a wicked tune, that one is!) The "Roots" demo tracks I could live without, but the live tracks (from the Chaos A.D. tour, I think) are well worth listening to.
