Sheavy
Stoner rock band from Newfoundland, Canada -- which is interesting enough in itself, since
I can't think of ANY bands, rock or otherwise, from Newfoundland, Canada! The most striking
thing about their sound is the lead singer, who sounds like the reincarnation of Ozzy
Osbourne from the 70's...and we're not talking some generic clone here, but a full-on dead
ringer. Indeed, the way I found about them was through a series of obscure Black
Sabbath cover songs ("War Pigs", "Junior's Eyes" & "Dirty Women") which for some dumb reason
never appeared on any of their commercially available albums, or at least I haven't been able
to find out where the hell they came from.
"The Electric Sleep"
- "Virtual Machine" (5:50)
- "Velvet" (4:03)
- "Destiny's Rainbow" (3:21)
- "Electric Sleep" (5:32)
- "Born in a Daze" (4:05)
- "Automaton" (4:08)
- "Savannah" (6:35)
- "Saving Me" (3:44)
- "Oracle" (6:49)
- "Stardust" (9:33)
The music here is varied enough to prevent anyone from calling them a shameless rip-off
clone band, although quite a few songs -- "Virtual Machine", "Destiny's Rainbow", and "Born in
a Daze" especially -- sound exactly like outtakes from Vol. 4 era Sabbath. Thick and
psychedelic, a great introduction to this band and the stoner rock genre in general.
"Celestial Hi-Fi"
- "Hyperfaster" (4:26)
- "What's Up Mr. Zero?" (3:40)
- "Stingray Part II" (5:20)
- "Solarsphere" (5:45)
- "Strange Gods, Strange Altars" (6:38)
- "Celestial Hi-Fi" (6:48)
- "At the Mountains of Madness" (5:01)
- "Persona" (6:42)
- "A Utopian Interlude"--instrumental (4:34)
- "Gemini (The Twins)" (3:56)
- "Tales from the Afterburner" (6:52)
A natural progression for the band, as the music now sounds like Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
outtakes. :) Which means they've got another three albums or so before they really start to
suck, and replace their drunken lead singer with a clone of Ronnie James Dio
instead, I guess...
