Simple Minds
Simple Minds was a band that sort of rode the coattails of my U2
craze back in the mid-80's. I wound up buying most of their records and several import
singles and such, but quickly tired of them and sold everything after they had been
collecting dust for years. Only in the last few years or so have I been working
on restoring some of their finer works to CD.
"New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)"
- "Someone Somewhere in Summertime" (4:36)
- "Colours Fly and Catherine Wheel" (3:49)
- "Promised You a Miracle" (4:25)
- "Big Sleep" (4:59)
- "Somebody Up There Likes You" (4:59)
- "New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)" (4:46)
- "Glittering Prize" (4:33)
- "Hunter and the Hunted" (5:54)
- "King is White and in the Crowd" (6:58)
Oh MY! I can't believe how HARD it was to find this CD used, considering how many
copies of their crappy earlier & later works I always find when I go shopping. Finally
got it, though. Not really impressed with most of the music, though...just got it for
my favorite tracks, "Promised You a Miracle" and "Someone Somewhere in Summertime".
"Sparkle in the Rain"
- "Up on the Catwalk" (4:45)
- "Book of Brilliant Things" (4:20)
- "Speed Your Love to Me" (4:25)
- "Waterfront" (4:49)
- "East at Easter" (3:30)
- "Street Hassle" (5:15)
- "White Hot Day" (4:33)
- "'C' Moon Cry Like a Baby" (4:21)
- "The Kick Inside of Me" (4:45)
- "Shake Off the Ghosts"--instrumental (3:58)
This was a CD I was searching for for a looong time, and finally ran across it!
It includes their two best songs of all time, "Waterfront" and "Up on the Catwalk". When I
bought it, songs 6 through 10 were especially fresh since apparently I had never listend to
side 2 of the record!
"Once Upon a Time"
- "Once Upon a Time" (5:44)
- "All the Things She Said" (4:16)
- "Ghost Dancing" (4:46)
- "Alive and Kicking" (5:24)
- "Oh Jungleland" (5:12)
- "I Wish You Were Here" (4:42)
- "Sancify Yourself" (5:00)
- "Come a Long Way" (5:08)
Geez, when did I buy this? You know you have too many CDs when you're typing up an HTML page
and run across something you didn't realize you had. It must have been in the bargain rack
because I wouldn't have bought it otherwise--although the songs are okay, this was the album
I got totally SICK OF and still am!

The coolest thing about Simple Minds is that they always play extended/alternate versions
of their songs in concert, the most notably different tunes here being "Book of Brilliant
Things", "New Gold Dream" and "Ghostdancing". Of course, it's loaded with a bunch of crapola
from Once Upon a Time (complete with female backup singers, of course) and there's no
escaping their horrible #1 single "Don't You Forget About Me"...but still, it's a mighty
fine live collection.
