Steel Prophet

Wow, here's a real blast from the past...I thought this L.A. band had died with the metal scene, until they suddenly showed up on the Call to Irons: A Tribute to Iron Maiden compilation! (See that page for more info.) They also do a mean version of Black Sabbath's "Neon Knights", which appears concurrently on Holy Dio: A Tribute to the Voice of Metal and Hell Rules: A Tribute to Black Sabbath.

"Visions of Force" (first demo; CDR)

  1. "Parthenogenesis" (6:12)
  2. "The Revenant" (3:42)
  3. "Eyes of the Night" (6:11)
  4. "Reign of Christ" (7:11)
  5. "Firestarter" (2:29)
  6. "Sungazer" (5:23)

This CDR was ripped straight from my original demo tape, and as far as I know, only 3 copies exist (and none of us are making copies...at least, not at the moment.) I always wondered what the last two songs were called, since they weren't listed on the demo ("Firestarter" is a fast, thrashy number, whereas "Sungazer" is a more catchy, mainstream-sounding song.)

"The Goddess Principle"

  1. "Reign of Christ" (7:19)
  2. "Souls Without Honor" (4:43)
  3. "Devoid of Logic" (5:13)
  4. "Ruby Dreams"--instrumental (1:40)
  5. "Prophecy Upon Us" (4:33)
  6. "The Inner Voice Silenced" (5:57)
  7. "To Grasp Eternity" (5:03)
  8. "Fatal Euphoria" (6:07)
  9. "Penance of Guilt" (6:06)
  10. "Parthenogenesis" (6:57)

This CD was a tough find, but luckily I got it reasonably cheap (around $14) from a nail-biting eBay auction. Two tracks -- "Parthenogenesis" & "Reign of Christ" -- come from their "Visions of Force" demo tape, but the songs are much less doomy & more thrashy than the demo versions. The production quality leaves something to be desired, but overall, this is a fine debut album.

"Dark Hallucinations"

  1. "Montag (Chapter One)" (5:58)
  2. "New Life (Chapter Five)" (5:27)
  3. "Strange Encounters (Chapter Two)" (4:42)
  4. "The Secret (Chapter Three)" (5:26)
  5. "We Are Not Alone" (5:31)
  6. "Betrayal (Chapter Four)" (6:38)
  7. "Look What You've Done" (4:03)
  8. "Scarred for Life" (4:26)
  9. "Spectres" (4:41)
  10. "The Apparition" (5:47)

Uh-oh, turns out this is their FOURTH album, which means I gotta search out their previous stuff as well.... Anyway, this CD is built around a 5-part song based on the novel Fahrenheit 451; they even got classy and mixed up the song order (kinda like how Saga did.) In addition, there's a cover of Fates Warning's "The Apparition" -- in fact, this whole thing sound like Fates Warning on steroids. :)
