Stone Temple Pilots

This San Diego grunge band originally was called "Shirley Temple's Pussy", but the record company forced them to change their name. WHY???

"Core"

  1. "Dead & Bloated" (5:10)
  2. "Sex Type Thing" (3:35)
  3. "Wicked Garden" (4:05)
  4. "No Memory" (1:19)
  5. "Sin" (6:05)
  6. "Naked Sunday" (3:55)
  7. "Creep" (5:30)
  8. "Piece of Pie" (5:22)
  9. "Plush" (5:08)
  10. "Wet My Bed" (1:35)
  11. "Crackerman" (3:12)
  12. "Where the River Goes" (8:20)

Hahaha, I remember joking about how this album imitates just about every grunge band known to mandkind..."Where the River Goes" and "Wicked Garden" bring up obvious similarities to Alice in Chains, their date-rape anthem "Sex Type Thing" could just have easily been done by Nirvana, and then of course there's "Creep", their infamous Pearl Jam clone! However, unoriginal as it may be, the songs are pretty damn good...

"Purple"

  1. "Meat Plow" (3:37)
  2. "Vasoline" (2:56)
  3. "Lounge Fly" (5:18)
  4. "Interstate Love Song" (3:14)
  5. "Still Remains" (3:33)
  6. "Pretty Penny" (3:42)
  7. "Silvergun Superman" (5:16)
  8. "Big Empty" (4:54)
  9. "Unglued" (2:34)
  10. "Army Ants" (3:46)
  11. "Kitchenware & Candybars" (8:06)

This album answers the question of whether or not STP would be a one-hit wonder or whether they would actually develop their own style. There are still traces of Pearl Jam evident in songs like "Big Empty", but for the most part, they do manage to craft their own sound on most of the tracks. (Originally, I thought this was called "12 Gracious Melodies", since that's what's written on the rear cover...why the name "Purple" then?? I couldn't tell you....)

"Tiny Music...Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop"

  1. "Press Play"--instrumental (1:08)
  2. "Pop's Love Suicide" (3:40)
  3. "Tumble in the Rough" (3:18)
  4. "Big Bang Baby" (3:21)
  5. "Lady Picture Show" (4:06)
  6. "And So I Know" (3:56)
  7. "Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart" (2:56)
  8. "Art School Girl" (3:32)
  9. "Adhesive" (5:31)
  10. "Ride the Cliche" (3:15)
  11. "Daisy"--instrumental (2:13)
  12. "Seven Cages Tigers" (4:17)

I've read a lot of reviews panning this album, but I just don't see what's so bad about it. To me, it's their best album to date, with lots of catchy melodies (especially "Big Bang Baby" and "Trippin' on a Hole...") which manage to sound fresh & innovative while allowing you to dance to them. Really, I was wondering where their next album would take them...but then, Weiland got himself tossed into rehab, and the rest of the band dispersed. (I've heard some of Weiland's solo stuff, and though it sounds very STP-ish, it just isn't the same anymore...)
