THE CD GALLERY: FAN MAIL

"Letters, we get letters, stacks and stacks of letters......"

Okay, in case you've written me recently and haven't received a reply, don't feel bad...I tend to get into these anti-social moods that last for years at a time. However, since quite a few people have told me interesting tidbits about the bands I listen to, or recommendations for other artists, or idiotic flaming rants that suggest the writer needs hospitalization, I figured the best thing I could do was quote some of them here...

In your Celtic Frost gallery, you mistakenly said "vinyl" instead of "crappy vinyl." Thought you'd like to know. -- D-Dog

King God Space deeply regrets the error. :-(

The song [Anthrax] did for the Airheads soundtrack ("London", a Smiths song) did appear on a release of their own, the Hy Pro Glow 1993 European Tour EP. They didn't break up, they're recording an album right now. Paul Crook and the band are producing it. The drums are finished and I bet they are working on guitars still. Apparently it's going to be heavier and faster.

They left Elektra and are signed to Ignition Records, a division of Tommy Boy Records. The reasons for leaving Elektra include: very poor promotion of Stomp 442 and that most of the people that worked for Elektra when they were first signed to it had been fired. I don't think they ever really got along w/ Elektra anyways. They wanted Bob Rock to produce Sound of White Noise but Anthrax chose Dave Jerden. Plus they just never reached Metallica's commercial success overkill. -- Justin DelPrince

Hi, I visited your page on The Eagles and was curious to know more about "The Last Resort", specifically the story about the administrator at Pepperdine. Can you elaborate? -- LeighAnne LaLonde

Ok, here's the story: An administrator at Pepperdine University was driving drunk and got into an accident on Pacific Coast Highway, in which the girlfriend of one of the Eagles' members was killed. The "Last Resort" song is both a tribute to her memory and a *scathing* denouncement of the university itself and its people. For example:

"Somebody laid the mountains low while the town got high." -- Pepperdine is built on a hillside in Malibu, with grading permits that normally would not be granted to just anyone.

"Some rich man came and raped the land...put up a bunch of earthly boxes, and Jesus People bought them." -- speaks for itself :)))

Congrats on finding [Dark Angel's] "We Have Arrived" on disc; believe it or not, the "crappy" artwork you mention IS the original artwork. On Axe Killer Records or something like that, from France. It was pressed overseas and then over here in the U.S.; at least that's what Gene Hoglan said when we first met in 1989--I was the proud owner of both covers, on vinyl. Gene was particularly impressed that I had the French pressing and commented that I was "a true fan" because I had the original cover and press...Peace. -- Mark Fields

The Napalm Death member who formed Carcass was called Bill Steel. And Carcass had another album after Heartwork called Swan Song, which is even slower and more MTV friendly. They also released a collection of rare stuff/radio sessions called "Wake Up and Smell the Carcass".

The album before Heartwork was "Necrotism: Descanting the Insalubrious" and if you are still into this stuff then you _must_ get this album as it is *THE* Carcass album!

Anyway, just thought I'd fill you in on all this stuff. :-)

Regards,
Simon.

1) Rod Evans was the singer for Deep Purple before Gillan.

2) The reason the sound of the CD for Book of Taliesyn (and the other pre-Gillan albums) is so bad is that several low budget, no-name labels have released them domestically. If you want something from the master tapes, you'll have to shell out some bucks and get the import versions by EMI.

3) I thought Slaves and Masters was a great CD (Although the title doesn't really fit and is kind of dumb anyway). When they opened the concert for this tour with "Burn" (something that never would have happened with Gillan in the band), the place went nuts. What a show!

Sorry dickhead, but you have no taste! But apparently no one fucking cares since no one visits here. Please drop the site, it really is a waste of space. Go to hell. Yours truly, Jon.

I'll betcha anything this little punk bastard plays Ultima Online....

Cool website. Excellent taste in music. Just wanted to clarify that Kurt was not the main guy in Agent Steel. He just happened to be one of the guitarists on the first album. Good player, though. Before the album was even released, I think he quit or was fired after he broke the singer's coffee table in half during an argument. Later... -- PAINCORP1

I have came across the most amazing CD. The title of it is "Cheapness and Beauty" and is by Boy George. Yes, that's right, Boy George!!! Since he has came out of the closet to the public he has written his autobiography entitled "Take it Like a Man" and put this CD out simultaneously. They both deal with many issues about being homosexual and the way you are treated by your family and society. I wanted to share with you that this CD is out there and you will be surprised at the music. It is nothing like Culture Club. The CD came out in 1995 but due to poor promotion of it in the USA not many people knew about it. It did well in the UK.

Here are the lyrics to one of the songs:

"Same Thing in Reverse"

How does it feel
What Do you do
When He's all alone with you
Do you kiss him
hold his hand
Who's the woman, who's the man
Is it twisted
Is it sick
Mother natures little trick
I don't have to feel no shame
In Gods image I am made

Your brother doesn't understand
How you could love another man
and your poor father thinks were cursed
It's the same thing in reverse

It's the Same thing in reverse
nothing better nothing worse
It's the same thing in reverse
It's the same thing
It's the same thing

What can you say
Where do you go
Do you want the world to know
make a prison of your fear
be a kamikaze queer

Bite my lip
Hold my tongue
Hope I'm not the only one
I don't have to be afraid
In Gods image I am made

(chorus)

Do I love him
Yes I love him
So don't question my affection
This is not some damn affliction
It's just love in contradiction

Black boys in cars
White boys with poisonous hearts
even on the one eyed guru
and why the hell are you looking at me
I never wanted to be part of the gang
I never saw this as part of my plan
I walk down the street with pride
Happy that your by my side.

This is just one of 13 great songs on the CD. One deals with AIDS, domestic violence in homosexual relationships, etc.

The CD can be found through the web. Some pages are cheap-cds.com, www.cdnow.com, and www.cdworld.com. You may even be lucky to find it in large music stores.

Also, as you may be aware of, Culture Club is having a reunion tour and is putting out new music. The "VH1 Storytellers / Greatest Moments" CD hit the shelves Aug. 11. It has new songs on it such as "I Just Wanna be Loved" and "Strange Voodoo"(what Boy George calls a queer love song)

Please E-Mail me directly if you want me to send you a small wave file sample of the song "Same Thing In Reverse" so that you can here how it sounds. My address is: mdlkdh@twave.net.

Thanks!!
Melissa

I have no idea if this came from some stupid mailing list or from somebody who visited my site, but I wanted to make one thing perfectly clear: If you EVER see me buying any CD from that HEROIN-ADDICTED, CROSS-DRESSING FAGGOT, better notify the police, because it means somebody has murdered me and put an imposter in my place! Thank you! Have a nice day!

Note on the Def Leppard cd gallery, you have some names mix up. its rick allen that lost his arm not steve allen, and it's steve clark that died not steve savage. that is if it was you that typed it in if not the don't worrie about this letter. -- Heybabe774@aol.com

This is one of the several e-mails I received pointing out what must have been the gravest faux pas to wind up in my Gallery. And the stupid thing is, I knew that! Why the HELL did I say STEVE ALLEN was their drummer?? WHY??? Oh dear, I need a Xanax...

I was checking out your site and read the deal about Pantera's glam days. Interestingly enough, I was living in Oklahoma during the time Pantera was starting out. Here's what I remember. Yes, they were glam. Oklahoma was always a second stop for Pantera in those days as they used to play at the Diamond Ballroom alot. They did hella-cover tunes and opened up for many hard rockers. It was like some weird ring they would do with club gigging. They had some weird lil' demo back then but I never landed one. I think it was some lil' bootleg made by the roadies. Later when they were picked up by Atlantic, everybody in Oklahoma was shitting because they were the same band everybody used to see in the City. I even think that they had a different name besides Pantera but I could be mistaken. -- easter@softcom.net

Your Fixx review made me laugh. Right on the mark!  I actually saw them live in '85. Did you use pathetic to describe them live?  You're too kind.  :-)

  See ya,

Since I have nothing to do (I AM reading this list, am I not?), I thought I'd just update a bit of info for you...

RE: Jethro Tull
Not only a horticulturist, but the inventor of the seed drill -- REALLY subtle double-entendre that maybe only one in a million people (or fewer) "gets". I've never seen the sexual reference mentioned ANYWHERE myself... even more subtle than Pearl Jam ... Explains somewhat Ian's penchance for ribaldry (see Hunting Girl and Velvet Green, my two favorites, anyway -- what does that say about me?)

"Jeffrey" is Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond (whose real name is Jeffrey Hammond -- who the hell knows why he added the second one?), the bass player between Glenn Cornick and John Glascock. He was always friends w/Ian Anderson, and Ian wrote a few songs about him before Jeffrey joined the band.

RE: Kansas
You really should give their early stuff another shot, judging by some of the other music you like. "Song for America" and "Masque" are their most progressive...

That's all. --Jon Godin

This is an absolutely PATHETIC PAGE! I think I'll come here whenever i want to feel good about myself! Marilyn Manson is a COCK SUCKER, do you hear me boy?! Heh heh heh... well, maybe you already know he's one. I would know if i got blow jobs from him, too. That's why i actually LIKE Marilyn Manson... he's a fag, like ME.

Always and love,

Hehe...words fail me. :-)

What a godsend, I've been looking for a site like this for a long time. Concise, unbiased, honest album reviews- Sort of like All-Music Guide, except you don't have to click on every album you want to see a review of....

I'll fill you in on some [Genesis] details you didn't seem clear on:

The drummers on "From Genesis to Revelation" are Chris Stewart (tracks 14-17) and John Silver (Tracks 1-13.)

The studio tracks from the US version of "Three Sides Live" will almost certainly be on a second box set, coming in mid-1999.

As you know, in the early days of Genesis, Peter would tell bizarre stories onstage. One such story was called "The Musical Box." The band eventually wrote an entire song filled with oblique references to this story, also called the Musical Box. The story basically goes like this: Two little kids, a girl and a boy, are playing croquet. The girl decapiatates the boy with her mallet. Two weeks later, his ghost comes out of a music box and starts propositioning her. The nurse smashes the music box. The song "The Music Box" explores the meotions of the ghost.

"Duke" isn't really a concept album, but Phil Collins used to tell a story onstage that tied a few of the songs loosely together. I can't find the website that had the story, but here it is as best I can remember it: Once there was a young man named Duke. He fell in love with a girl named Duchess, but she didn't love him back. Then he fell in love with the television, which was quite painful. After he had the glass removed from his private parts, he went to a rest home for Horny Young Men known as Duke's End.

If you've never actually found out, Wrathchild America changed their name to Soulz at Zero and has released another 3-4 albums under that name. The music is the same and still great! Recently, the drummer Shannon larkin left and joined Ugly Kid Joe, and I think another member left and joined Snot, so who knows if they'll go on, but the run's been great. If you liked the first two WA albums (Climbin the Walls and 3D) definately pick up a Soulz at Zero CD.

A fellow fan,

I´m a brasilian christian listener of Stryper and I´d like to say
that Satan hasn´t finally claimed their souls. Like always GOD has won and
nowadays, after the time they spend fair away from God, the ex-Stryper
members play Rock for the Holy one (Tim Gaines and Oz Fox in a band
called Sindizzy and Michal Sweet in his solo career).

" Anyone who ask shall receive
Jesus in your heart
Is time for you to start
Giving God all the glory "

More Than a Man (To Hell With The Devil)

Stryper

Igor Azevedo Sampaio.

Is it just me, or are Christian rock fans the touchiest people alive? That and the anti-Prince people (of course, I *agree* with the Prince-haters!)

I was a bit dissapointed by your quote "Satan got their souls" Here's an update. After Stryper's tn year existance they split up because of the fact that their music didn't reach it's goal anymore of proclaiming Jesus... Lead Singer and guitarist, Michael Sweet went on in a solo career producing two albums so far titled Michael Sweet and Real. Unfortionately he mellowed to almost like a country sound but in "Real". The "Michael Sweet" album still has some of that Stryper sound in it.

Drummer Robert Sweet and Bass Player Tim Gaites joined "King James". A very good self titled hard rocking band with the ex-Whitecross lead guitarist - Rex Carrol. Give It a listen, it's worth it!

That's all I know 'bout those guys. Yip, their back singing for Jesus! As for Rythmn Guitarist Oz Fox .... nobody knows what happended to him.

PS: Michael Sweet has his own web site but he's doesn't feel comfortable talking 'bout Stryper. I've tried??

Cheers

The Saint

quite the collection my friend.... personally i disagree with you that one can't listen to said music (black sabbath, etc) and keep one's faith... personally darwin never made any sense to me so i'll stick with christianity... but hell i could be an anomaly... --drakkos20@hotmail.com

Hmm, I don't think I actually said that but oh well....to clarify, my interest in "Satanic" bands was not the sole reason for abandoning my Christian faith, although it *was* a key reason, mainly because the Christian sect I was associated with claimed that heavy metal & Christianity were incompatible, and I completely disagreed with them. If my Christian mores had been less conservative, I might still believe in Jesus -- hell, it really was nice believing there was some intelligent, all-powerful force that cares about you and watches out for your well-being, it's a cold dark world out there and it's only natural for man to create some illusion thus comforting him in the cold darkness. Unfortunately, my spiritual explorations have confirmed that there IS no God, and if he did exist, he would be so far advanced that his relationship to us would be wider than the relationship between humans and amoebas! The whole notion that "God created Man in his own image" is bunk, MAN created GOD in HIS own image! Isn't it interesting that...oops, sorry, ranting again. Please forgive me. :)

you dont know nothin bout music..thats all i can tell from your crappy site -- Connor MacLeod [hypocrite@antisocial.com]

Apparently he doesn't know how to set up his computer either...this message was dated March 8th, 1982!! Hmm maybe it's a Y2K thing...

I just looked over your CD collection. You gotta BUY the first new BLONDIE album in 17 years. It may just be the friggin' freakiest album out there in a long time and will have surprisingly plenty of mileage. I think tracks like 'Screaming Skin', 'No Exit' and 'Dig Up the Conjo' may be up your alley. -- Wesley Miller

I know you don't want any hate mail, but i read your opinion on one of my favorite groups and i thought i'd let you know mine. I wish i wouldn't have seen your Cd gallery or just your comments on Def Leppard. I know everyone has their own opinion, but you don't have to be a dick. I'm not being as rude as i would like to be because i thought that anyone who has the time to go through all of their cd's and do a profile and write an opinion on them has no life. What made you come up with this idea? Go out and meet people. Def Leppard could care less about your opinion and so could the other people you trashed. And as for the used bins being full of DL, how would you know unless you are looking for them? Maybe the drum solos aren't the greatest, maybe he's not the best drummer but give him credit for trying. People rag on him all the time and it's really not funny b/c he is handicapped.Thats all i have to say to you, i've wasted enough of my time.BTW GET A LIFE! -- LazyBum24@aol.com

Gee, *I* have no life?? At least I don't go around flaming other websites that make fun of Carl Palmer...well, maybe I do, but I don't take it so damn PERSONALLY, for Chrissakes...

I know you said not to contact you if all we want to say is how much we hate you page. But your outlook on AC/DC is insane! AC/DC is to date one of the worlds biggest and greatist bands ever! Back in Black is the second best selling metal album ever & 6th best of all times! (15 million) And thats only one of their classic & cridicly acclamed albums you trashed! Your the worst tin eared music cridic in the world! And the 3 cord rock that you cant stand is what made AC/DC so ground breaking! infact every AC/DC album accept two (fly on the wall & flick of the switch) where cridicly acclamed! So next time you listen to AC/DC clean the wax out of your ears! AC/DC rules!!! you dick!

p.s. And to say Bon Scott was a bad vocalist makes you a pathedic excuse for a "music lover" & a human!

p.p.s. Bon Scott was a God!
--Snow_Blind@goplay.com

Hmm...what's a "cridic"? Some kind of Australian slang? Should I be offended? In any case, claiming an album's greatness based on album sales is ridiculous...especially when the all-time best seller is Michael Jackson's "Thriller"!!!

Not a BAD collection per-se, but why no Scorn? Why no Techno Animal? At least you had Mr. Bungle (Saw them in 1992 at Bogart's in Cinncinatti, OH--got to talk to the sax player and Grotus after the show). I've been corresponding w/ [ex-Napalm Death drummer] Mick Harris on the net for the last week, and his comments on Godflesh have been pretty amusing, but don't quote me on em'. He basically felt the last album was "shit", and that Justin is just doing the band for financial security now, which isn't out-of-the-question. Still, I think he has a little more to accomplish with Godflesh, I just wish he'd explore some more territory he began on Pure like "Pure II" (yeah, I'm THAT kind of a fan and musician to boot).

Dunno, Mick's comments were kinda tinged with anger from past incidents with Justin and Kevin Martin (Ice, God and Techno Animal, etc.). Napalm Death was a good idea for awhile, but WHY IN GOD'S NAME have they continued? Oh, the financial security thingy! Pure is my all-time favorite, but "Streetcleaner" definately has its moments. "Like Rats" is one of my favorite and basically expresses my feelings for all these fucking breeders in the world--go fucking adopt a child ferchrissakes!!!%@&^#$@ There are PLENTY around...too many polluting and stealing mine and other lifeforms air and environment.

Actually, I love taking acid and listening to Godflesh. But hey, people tell me I'm pretty fucked, so they must be right if they outnumber me. This is important advice in our ever-conforming society: suck the corporate tit, mateys. Will possibly be doing a collaboration with Harris if he likes my DAT, so wish me luck. He is soooooo good. You really need to add some Scorn to your collection. Can't believe you don't have any considering Justin is on the first album!! Cheers.

Matt Janovic/Evil Dr. God/Evil Ph.D

Hello there, I totally admire your honesty with your like for Keith Green. I myself am a huge Keith Green fan....His music goes beyond just music but reaches the soul. Keith died when he was only 28 years old in a plane crash back in 82. He lived a hippy life and traveled through the 60's and some of the 70's exsperimenting with all kinds of drugs and religions...But when he was at the bottom of his life and nothing else worked for him, he simply turned to Jesus. Through his music and lryics God began to use him and help many like his kind find Christ. I think you would be interested in reading his life story wrote by his former wife. The Book is called NO COMPROMISE..... you can catch a glanse at it at http://keithgreen.com
I too have lived and still struggle with the life of getting high and keeping my faith. Keiths music helps me to see God and myself and to become a true follower of Jesus Christ. I am currently in the process of putting a movie together to one of his songs....
The Prodigal Son suite....I am sure you have listened to it...but listen to it again as you being the son and God being the Father...that is the way it was wrote...It was acctually Keiths moment in life when he found God's true mercy, grace, and forgiveness.......Well I hope you recieve this email and somehow it touchs the depths of your heart.......
In Christ,
Dean L. Bauman
(The Poet)

Just one of the several Keith Green emails I suddenly got one day...and they were ALL NICE!! Just goes to show you why I really like and respect Keith's music over other Christian artists -- he sings of tolerance, not indoctrination; and forgiveness, not hellfire & damnation. It's obvious that his fans get the message as well...something all you Stryper fans can take a lesson from!!

I can't waint for another Boston album. You don't get it. --RSca105236@aol.com

That fine with me, because I don't want it!

There are three other Masters of Reality albums that you have totally missed. Check out Sunrise on the Sufferbus, How High the moon (live at the viper rooms) and the newly released Welcome to the Western Lodge.

The Blue garden was a re-released version of Masters of Reality which features the original version of sleep walkin' with it's banjo piece at the end. Doraldina's prophecies was completely missed off the Blue Garden and was happily reinstated on the Masters of Reality album. This is the original track list - listen to how Doraldina's prophecies links into John Brown for example.

Anyhoo, this is not meant as criticism - your site is pretty darn cool but as I have already mentioned Masters have not disappeared they are here to stay

Whilst trying "Sherlock" on my mac I stumbled across your review of [Pallas's] The Sentinel ! Thanks ! However I must mention that splitting Rise and Fall was part of the overall concept to start with, and that the band have played it this way live this year. MP3 files of the live Atlantis Suite taken from the FOH mixer are available on the official site as are lots of other things. As you seem to like the Sentinel I thought you'd like to know!

Now if only the official site came up on searches like your review did !!!

You can access it via http://www.pallas-uk.com

I've been enjoying reading the CD gallery lately, and I just read your GTR review. It reminds me of a story I heard (which even if it's not true I still think is hilarious). The story was that some magazine's review of the GTR album was "SHT". -- Dan Rench

Sounds like that review I read about a G.W.A.R. concert...the entire review was, "GWHY?" (I even have the clipping to prove it.)

Your section on Laaz Rockit is incorrect. The last album was Nothing's Sacred. I know this because I was the guitar player that played and wrote most of the album. If you see the CD, Scott Sargent is listed as the new guitar player, however, if you look inside you'll see that it says k. savich for guitars. This was done to spite me because I quit the band. Anyway, just thought I'd let you know. Thanks. -- Ken Savich

Now I think I can clear up a mystery for you. You mention not knowing why Motorhead went live under the name "Iron Fist and the Hordes from Hell" way back. When Lemmy first formed the band he wanted to use the name "Bastards". His manager informed him that that simply wouldn't fly. While tossing up names, the 'band with no name' had a show to do. Lemmy was asked what they should be billed under and "Iron Fist and the Hordes from Hell" was born.

I've read this story in a few different places and magazines, but still may be be urban legend, "buyer beware" :)

Love the site,

grub

In Reply to: Well I'll be sure to thank you effusively in my next update... (more) posted by King God Space on March 24, 2000 at 09:44:10:

80s heavy metal has nothing to do with term "power metal." It is CLASSIC HEAVY METAL, end of story. The term "power metal" was, supposedly, invented by Lars Ulrich, but nobody has used it to describe either thrash, classic heavy, or glam, the three dominant metal genres of mid-80s.

Term "power metal" is now being referred to virtually one thing: melodic speed metal. The first band to do it in this role is Helloween. They are universally (not just my opinion) regarded as the starters of the genre. All bands that play melodic speed and sound a little like Helloween are POWER METAL BANDS. That would be: Stratovarius, Angra, Gamma Ray, Hammerfall, Nocturnal Rites, Rhapsody (although this one is with strong baroque influences), Blind Guardian (this one has a little thrash in it), Kenziner, etc.

Also, there is another thing, called "American Power Metal." This one is classified with the dirtier sound and not necessarily playing speedy tunes. Basically, American power metal is melodic thrash. Such as Jag Panzer, Iced Earth, Division, Steel Prophet (at least what I've heard of them), etc.

CERTAINLY NOT BON JOVI, which sounds nothing like any of the above bands, and something I'm even having a hard time calling "metal." It's hard rock, pure and simple.

NOW, coincidentally, almost all 90s power metal bands play similarly to what in the 80s was referred to as "classic heavy" or "speed metal." But since nobody uses these two terms anymore, they are reserved specifically to describe 80s bands, like Judas Priest and Accept. This is where your confusion must have come from. Still the BJ comment is unexcusable.

>their older albums were. They even dabble in the hardcore style.

Hmm...the thing about Sodom is, what I liked about 'em so much was that they were so BAD. And by "Agent Orange", which didn't suck as much, I totally lost interest in them. I've heard great things about "Code Red", and I might even pick it up if I see it used, but that opens up another problem -- you see, I've put a "cut-off" limit on most of the 80's Euro-thrash bands I was once into, SOLELY to save my budget. Bands like Sodom, Rage, Running Wild, Gamma Ray, and others have put out TONS of albums since metal virtually disappeared from the U.S., and I don't care how good they are, I simply CAN'T AFFORD IT!!!

Hehe, the old "swoop & grab" trick...I've done it myself many times, and even gotten death threats because of it. :) But really, that is the ONLY way to score good deals on eBay. You don't need to monitor the auction 24 hrs a day, just bookmark it and make time to be available when it closes. Then synchronize your watch w/ ebay's "current time" and enter the HIGHEST PRICE you are willing to pay for it, then 10-15 seconds before the end (or more, depending on your connection), hit "Place Bid". If your bid isn't high enough, oh well...but if it is, NOBODY can outbid you!

Hey bro, I was digging your page (You need a section dedicated to sick pics my man) anyway you said you didn't know what happened to Krist Novoselik, the bassist for Nirvana, well being the HUGE fan of Nirvana that I am (and always was) I have a copy of the report on him circa 1997:

Solo
by Jeffrey Jolson-Colburn
Aug 24, 1997, 12:15 PM PT

It's back to the beginning for ex-Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic, who on Tuesday will release his first new album since Kurt Cobain's suicide ended the seminal grunge band's run three years ago.

Novoselic has formed his own band, Sweet 75, as the other member of the Nirvana trio, Dave Grohl, did before him with Foo Fighters.

Novoselic, 32, teams with eclectic Venezuelan street singer Yva Las Vegas (get it?) for the self-titled debut from Geffen Records, and it marks a big step for him, both professionally and musically. "It has been a long time since I've played for an audience that didn't know every word of every song," Novoselic says of his gigs with Sweet 75. "People who showed up were Nirvana fans and didn't know what to expect. Seeing them come away pleasantly surprised has been great."

Adds Las Vegas: "I know a lot of people would like nothing better than 'Nirvana--The Sequel.' It's been a real eye-opener for me to see how little some fans wanted Krist to grow as an artist. Having never played in an iconoclastic rock band before, I could never understand the pressure to repeat oneself."

Nonetheless, Nirvana fans may find the punk-pop feels familiar on some cuts. Otherwise, to call this album diverse is an understatement. It ranges from grungy Latin folk to country (a tribute to Dolly Parton?!?), to alterna-power pop to bluesy rock. Trumpeter Herb Alpert even makes a cameo on one tune, as does R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck.

"We were conscious of breaking out of the 'rock album' mode," Novoselic says. "We have a horn section on a few songs and a traditional Venezuelan folk song, as well."

As if all the other changes in his music weren't enough, Novoselic also changes instruments for the album, switching from bass to electric 12-string guitar.

Las Vegas, a U.S. resident for half of her 33 years, met Novoselic in Seattle. One sidewalk performance earned her a gig at his birthday party in 1995.

Sweet 75 should be touring soon--as Novoselic puts it, "The art part of the process is over. Now it's time to work."

Anyway, I sure do miss the old PK page, man was that sweet. But all good things must come to an end. I will be having a castle and Keep as well here shortly (Keep fingers crossed) when new patch comes out so I may place the deeds to them that I have. UO has it's huge ups and downs now because it is more user friendly but way less PK friendly. Can't win em all I will just have to keep on fighting them =) Peace.
-KANE

P.S.: "KANE" is my old PK buddy from Ultima Online. Boy do I miss that game...but I can never, ever go back. Never. :(

You need some early Grand Funk Railroad, the Stones & INXS.

Steve

One minor note about your TOOL section; that riff in "Prison Sex" is actually guitar, believe it or not! Nearly all of TOOL's music is tuned to dropped d (d-a-d-g-b-e) guitar wise; obviously they're going even lower here, with the low e string tuned to b, so it's played like (b-a-d-g-b-e)... Pretty sick, huh?

Rock on,
Fisk

i went on hitchiking vacation

Just wanted to say...this by far the most POETIC email I've ever received...

The reason "Jerusalem" was included on ELP's Brain Salad Surgery album was because it's a concept album which tells a science fiction story about "an age of power, when no one had an hour to spare." "Jerusalem," as England's national hymn (or one of them), is supposed to represent English Victorian ideals (read Matthew Arnold) and colonialism. The concept is about a future where the Victorian English mindset is extended way into the future, but where everything -- politics, sex, religion, et al -- have been so reduced to a computer operated "show," that the people have become computer dependent. And the computers so advanced, that they take over. I guess you could say it's the story of how high ideals (represented by "Jerusalem"), if carried out to their logical conclusion, can result in dehumanization.

This may not sound like a very original idea for a science fiction story now, but the idea of computers taking over was a pretty popular sci-fi theme in 1973 when Peter Sinfield and ELP came up with Brain Salad Surgery.

In a radio interview in 1982 ("Off the Record" with Mary Turner, 8/1/1982 broadcast), Phil Ehart said that Point of Know Return is not a concept album at all. And while I have to admit he's in a position to know, it's easy to see why so many Kansas fans think it is. Everything on Point seems to tell a story about the last days of a dying race, who turn out to be us. The story goes like this; a scientist (Einstein) has a premonition of the fate of his people which he relates to the king (in "Portrait [He Knew]"). But the king is too caught up in his own world to hear it. Eventually the premonition comes true (in "Lightning's Hand" through "Sparks of the tempest") and the resulting desolation is observed by a visiting race who come to Earth and find that "Nobody's Home," because they've (we've) wiped them(our)selves out.

It sounds like something from the Old Testament, or a science fiction prophesy, like George Orwell’s 1984. And while admittedly, this theme may seem like a downer, I think Point of Know Return was meant as a warning. "Hopelessly Human"’s closing lines’ disclaimer, ". . . I'm just stating my views/ Now you can choose/ What do you feel/ Is it for real this time," seems to indicate that the outcome of "Nobody’s Home" is not inevitable, but only what could happen – and could refer, not just to the song "Hopelessly Human" itself, but also to the entire preceding album. --Bill

Man, I saw your page with CD Listings and info for NIN and I think it is fucking bullshit that you would say any artists music is worthless especially Trent Reznor. I'll bet he has ore talent in his shit than you have in your head. Get a god damn clue you stupid fuck.. If you are near me I'd like to meet you so I can beat your fucking ass, skull fuck you and fuck your mother and your sister just for your being so fucking stupid.. Mother fucker! FUCK YOU and your whole fucking family.. mother fucker..

P.S. Awaiting your worthless reply =]

Sheeya, like I'd waste my time responding to an email like THIS...I can't even figure out what the guy is complaining about...

You obviously don't have a clue. If you don't like Iron Maiden then why buy all of those CDs/crappy vinyls. You've made a lot of Maiden fans very angry. --Robert Cattle

What the...why all the hate mail about bands I *like*?? I actually wrote this guy back asking him to explain what he meant by making Maiden fans angry. He never responded. Surprise.

gday just about Mortal Sin. i have NEVER seen the copy of Mayhemic Destruction you have got, and im Australian myself!!! our Aussie version has a completely different cover, and doent have the bonus tracks by lethal.

anyway MS had a cd out in 1991 Called Rebelious Youth, which featured a completely different line up except for Andy (Bass). they broke up soon after and reformed in 1996 with an EP (Revelation Of The Mind, impossible to get trust me) released 1997 with 90% of the original line up.

they broke up again in 1998

On your page, you say that there's a paradox in the title of Burzum's album, Ragnarok (A New Beginning).

This is in fact not the case. Ragnarok IS a new beginning in Nordic mythology. When the old gods are killed, new ones take their place (among these is Balder). It's sort of like the Christian Apocolypse - earth is destroyed, but there is a new life for the righteous in Heaven. Everything must be renewed.

just wanted to let you know that a few membrs from helmet were previously in an amazing hardcore band called another wall. they released one ep on doghouse records and i think it's still available. also, quicksand released an amazing ep on revelation records out of huntington beach, ca. quicksand was also comprised of members from hardcore acts such as gorilla biscuits, side by side, underdog, etc. i highly recommend both of these releases from another wall and quicksand.

i stumbled upon this website while remeniscing about my old cyclone temple album (the first one). i must get it again!

great site. brings back a lot of good thrash metal memories.

About Carcass. There was no member in this brilliant band called Bill STEEL. His name was STEER. A tip, if you´re looking for more released radio sessions with the band, is "The Peel Sessions", recorded in dec. 1988 and broadcasted in jan. 1989 by the John Peel Show on Radio 1, BBC. Includes the songs "Crepitating Bowel Erosion", "Slash Dementia", "Cadaveric Incubator of Endo Parasites" and "Reek of Putrefaction". Just love the bands songtitles and lyrics... The more complicated and larger amount of long, hard-to-spell medical terms, the better...

P.S. If you´re really interested in raw, evil and hard underground music, please vivit: http://home.graffiti.net/pesten/. The homepage of Pest. Swedens most promising black metal band. Cold and evil metal in the old true vein. And no, I am not playing in the band and trying to get some free commercial and attention. They just ruel...

Or why not visit www.geocities.com/hirvinussi/ and learn more about the odd-ball band Hautajajs Hirvi Nussi (finnish for Funeral Moose Fuck)

OH GAWD..."Go Nussi a Hirvi" is gonna be my new catchphrase! :)))

To say "crappy vinyl" is naive. It emphasizes that no matter how authoritative your writing seems, your preconceptions cloud your judgement. Of course, to be human is to believe crappy marketing. Don't forget that CDs cost less to manufacture than vinyl records ever did, but through "perfect sound forever" slogans, gained appeal at a higher price. Musicians make a smaller percent of the sale, stores make a smaller percent of the sale, and record companies have been able to enjoy all the increased profit margain.

In fact, there is more information on 100% analog recordings than on any 44.1 kHz digital recordings. When an analog LP is compared to its digitally sampled CD, in a very high quality audio system, any healthy person's ears can percieve that CD was released to the market before its technology bettered analog. Now we are stuck with the inferior sampling and bit rates. CDs don't get as easily damaged by careless handling and they also are not as demanding for inexpensive components to reproduce (of course the mass-market equipment manufacturers got on the band-wagon to suggest everybody needed "digital ready" speakers). But being more tolerant of crappy handling and crappy equipment does not make them better.

I enjoyed your Jethro Tull reviews so much, that I just wish you didn't screw up on the vinyl vs. digital issue so bad.

Warren Jarrett

Ah...so the VERY INVENTION of compact discs was a record company conspiracy??? Now I've truly heard everything. Incidentally, I wrote back to this person pointing out a few things (in particular the fact that human hearing tops out at ~22khz, which is equivalent to a 44khz sample rate, so anything higher would be pointless, until dolphins start buying CDs) -- he wrote back a 3-page tirade that included a list of interrogative questions that made me think I was on trial for the Enron scandal or something...Jesus, I *knew* it was a mistake to engage these people!!

You said that you got a promotion-record with Motörhead containing
"No Voices In Ihe Sky" and "Eagle Rock", I don't have that one, but I do
have a12" clear vinyl, with no sleeve, labels or any markings whatsoever
with "The one to sing the blues" and "Deadmans Hand". I also got the
"No remorse" on vinyl, limited edition, in leather sleeve. Does this
make you a little bit jealous?

/Peder

Jealous over crappy vinyl? ME?? Hahahahaha, that's really funny. :) Although it was a major pain in the ass to find the song "Deadmans Hand" on Napster...

Really enjoy your website. I consult it often when buying new CD's. You should check out HOLOCAUST's latest release "The Courage To Be". Fantastic cd I can't stop listening to the damn thing it totally sucked me in from the first listen. Also, you should give DEATH another chance. "The Sound Of Perseverance" is technically brilliant & in my opinion the best release of 1998. It might even be better than "Leprosy". Take it easy.
Jeff

"Give Death another chance"...now there's some sound advice. :)

In your Rush section, you said that it was the first time that anyone besides band members had performed on a Rush album was Time Stand Still (with Aimee Mann).

However, Ben Mink played on Signals (Losing It)

It sucks. You're obviously ignorant. Proof of the pudding - "though I never
heard it, it obviously sucks". What kind of comment is that??!!?? Maybe you
should try listening to it before judging it. By the way that Motley Crue
song rocks, as does most of there stuff, moron.

Sometimes you don't have to look at a turd to know it's a turd, you can tell by the smell. For instance, I've never heard an 'Nsync album, but I know they all suck. And that new song by Metallica and Ja Rule, I knew it was going to suck, long before I downloaded it. :) By the way, it's "their stuff", not "there stuff". (Moron.)
