Notes: I was going to do a full tape series of consecutively numbered songs, but got stuck at "eight". One of these days I'll get around to expanding it. I filled the blank space on side one with "13" (that 30-second song that simply goes "Thir-TEEN! Thir-TEEN! Thir-TEEN!") and looped it over and over again until it was about six minutes long. When I first played it for my friends, they nearly pissed themselves laughing!

Notes: This tape was made a day or two after the Gulf War broke out. Ostensibly, it's an expanded version of a "War Pigs" tape I made some months earlier. (These were the only versions of the song I owned at the time -- I have twice as many now.) This one still gets its fair share of play time.

  2. Def Leppard "Gods of War"
  3. Pink Floyd "Dogs of War"

  6. Saint Vitus "War Is Our Destiny"
  7. Motorhead "Marching Off to War"
  8. The Doors "The Unknown Soldier"
  9. Bathory "War Pigs"

Notes: Now that "Desert Storm II" has broken out, it's only natural to have a second war tape as well. :) Plus I've got another six versions of "War Pigs" for when we go after North Korea...unfortunately, I totally forgot about Reverend's "Butcher of Baghdad" until it was too late.

  10. Exodus "The Last Act of Defiance"
  11. Public Enemy "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos" (***)
  12. Queensryche "Anarchy X/Revolution Calling"

Notes: The Los Angeles Riots were the most laudable reaction possible to that unconscionable miscarriage of justice that was the first Rodney King trial, and I would have been down there too looting and pillaging, except that I'm white and probably would have gotten shot! So the best thing I could do to give tribute to this wonderful act of civil expression was to make the second in the "Current Events" series of tapes. This tape went through several versions, of which early ones included such songs as "Light My Fire" and "Burnin' for You", but for some reason I let my rap-loving roommate talk me into redoing the track list again and again to include a whole bunch of rap songs that may convey the appropriate message, but suck. So this was definitely a situation where the idea was sound, but the execution was very poor.

  3. Iron Maiden "2 Minutes to Midnight"
  4. Greg Lake "Nuclear Attack"
  5. Violence "Bodies on Bodies"
  6. Motorhead "Dancing on Your Grave"
  7. Fates Warning "Still Remains"
  8. Stryper "The Battle Hymn of the Republic"

Notes: The latest addition to the "current events" series is my personal tribute to those whose lives were changed forever by...well, you all know by now. Yes, there's some black humor in the song choices (which were somewhat inspired by Clear Channel's List of Banned Songs), but seriously I think these selections tell the story quite well. Side one documents the day of the attack, whereas side two is my forecast for what fate lies ahead for Afghanistan...
